Teen Troubles: Gangs
Learning about gangs and signs of gang activity can help you as a parent protect your children and your community from the fear and destruction that gangs can inflict. Why do Teens join gangs? Racism, poverty, loneliness, and media influences can all affect the chances of your teen joining a gang.
Preventing your teen from joining a gang:
- Provide strong and loving family support for your teen so he or she will not be forced to search for these basic needs from a gang.
- Encourage your teen to stay in school and finish his education. Young people who successfully participate in and complete education have greater opportunities to develop into reasonable adults.
- Develop positive alternatives such as sports, music, or drama programs for after school and on the weekends.
- Talk with other parents about keeping your community gang-free.
- Work with police and other agencies. Report all suspicious activity.
